Key Insights for Families
Arizona entry point: The pathway runs through DDD enrollment → ALTCS eligibility → contracted health plan services. SARRC and AZA United are the best initial navigators. The Autism Society of Greater Phoenix's free Autism 101 class is the most efficient on-ramp for new families.
New Jersey entry point: Youth under 21 access services through PerformCare/CSOC; adults 21+ go through NJ DDD waiver programs. Autism NJ's 800-4-AUTISM helpline and SPAN are ideal starting points. For Essex County, The Arc of Essex County's lifespan services and YCS's free evaluations for children under 5 are uniquely valuable local resources.
Insurance note: Arizona's Steven's Law has dollar caps ($50K under age 9, $25K ages 9–16) while New Jersey's mandate has no explicit dollar cap for medically necessary ABA. Families with self-funded employer plans should note state mandates do not apply — ask your insurance member services line whether your plan is fully insured or self-funded.
